Well, I don't think anyone saw this coming.

Yesterday at its pre-TGS (Tokyo Game Show) conference in Japan, Sony announced the PS Vita, a micro-console which allows you to play PS Vita and PSP games on your TV using your PS3's Dualshock controllers. Apart from playing games, you'll also be able to stream video from sites like Hulu and possibly YouTube too.
Announced along with a new, smaller PS Vita, the Vita TV will also allow you to play PSOne games and PS4 games via its remote play feature. However not all Vita games will work on it because of games which make extensive use of the Vita's touchscreen features (which this console obviously doesn't have). Maybe they'll find a way to make the DualShock 4 work with it so we can make use of its touchpad.
Release date is set for November 14th in Japan ( and eventually other parts of the world), the Vita TV will cost about $100 for the basic version and $150 for a special edition that comes with an 8GB Vita memory card and a wireless controller.
Just looking at the PS Vita TV, it's obvious to see that it was designed to take on the new wave of affordable micro-consoles/tv boxes like the Ouya, and Apple TV and if it was up to me, right now I'd rather get the Vita TV than any of the other options out there. Why? Because of the awesome Vita, PSOne and PSP games I can play on it! Almost everything else out there is either based on android on iOS and why should I get an android based game console/tv box when I already have an Android tablet? Also, I'm pretty excited with what the homebrew scene will come up with when they finally get their hand on this baby.
See Sony's Press Release for more details on the PS Vita TV.
